Setting Up Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

Two-factor authentication adds a second step to logging in — after your password, you'll also need a 6-digit code from an authenticator app. This is optional and can be turned on or off at any time.

1. Enabling 2FA

Go to your account security settings.
Start 2FA setup — you'll be shown a QR code and a secret key.
Scan the QR code with an authenticator app (Google Authenticator, Authy, 1Password, or similar).
Enter the 6-digit code your app generates to confirm setup.
You'll be shown 8 backup codes — save these somewhere safe. Each one can be used once if you lose access to your authenticator app.

2. Logging In With 2FA

Once enabled, logging in is a two-step process: enter your email and password as usual, then enter the current 6-digit code from your authenticator app. Codes refresh every 30 seconds — if one is rejected, wait for the next one and try again.

3. Using a Backup Code

If you've lost access to your authenticator app, use one of the 8 backup codes you saved during setup instead of a 6-digit code. Each backup code works exactly once — after using one, cross it off your list. If you run out, contact support to verify your identity and regain access.

4. Turning 2FA Off

You can disable 2FA from the same account security settings where you enabled it. You'll need to confirm with a current 2FA code or backup code before it's turned off, to prove it's really you.

Q: What happens if I enter the wrong code too many times?
- A: Login attempts are rate-limited — after repeated incorrect attempts, you'll need to wait roughly a minute before trying again.
Q: Are my backup codes and 2FA secret stored securely?
- A: Yes — both are stored encrypted, not in plain text.
Q: Does 2FA apply to team members too, or just the account owner?
- A: 2FA is set up per login — anyone with their own login can enable it independently for their account.
